Mrs. Rebecca Villegas
I have been a Mentor Teacher and Special Education Teacher for Bangor Township Virtual School since its first semester in January, 2015. Being a part of BTVS’s pioneer team is an experience like no other. I am delighted to say that my job is my passion, and I am excited to get up and go to work everyday.
Here is little bit about what I do outside of BTVS. First and foremost, is my family. I married my jr. high school sweetheart, Luciano Villegas. Together we are raising three very lively spirited daughters, each with a personality of her own. Alexandria (26), lives in California, works for the United States Post Office delivering mail by the beaches of Laguna. Veronica (24), lives in Old Towne Saginaw and is a cosmetologist at Don Angelo's Aveda Lifestyle Salon. Cassandra (17), lives with me :), is a senior, has no idea what she’s going to do. Last and definitely not least, we have two dogs, Baby-Girl (5), Pickles (4), and two cats, Big-Boy (3), and Mr. Binx (2). I am blessed to have a close relationship with my extended family. We spend much of our time together traveling around beautiful Michigan, visiting and adventuring at many of our great state’s scenic destinations. Some of my simple pleasures are, fresh sheets, vintage outdoor furniture, driving with the radio up and windows down, listening to children read, diving into huge breathtaking fresh water waves, long talks with elderly people, pointing out constellations in the night sky, a full house, new school supplies, starting a bonfire by myself, and cooking for my kids minus the dishes!
After high school, I became a certified legal secretary, with that, I worked at The Saginaw County Courthouse. Eventually, I realized that this was not something I wanted to do, actually I was bored out of my mind! So I did some soul searching and realized that I loved to learn and why not share my love with others. I secured employment in my home district, Saginaw Public Schools, for 19 years. During that time, I was a teacher’s aid in an cognitive impaired classroom. Once I became a certified teacher, I was promoted to teach in my own special education classroom. I have been a Self-Contained K-5 Teacher, a 10th Grade Geometry Teacher, an 8th Grade Pre-Algebra Teacher, a 5th Grade Inclusion Teacher, a Safety-Patrol Leader, School Improvement Team Member, Girl Scout Leader, and a Peer on Peer Coordinator. Along the way, I’ve obtained a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education, endorsements in science, social studies and learning disabilities, Training in Statewide Autism Resources, Frameworks of Poverty, Teaching Traumatized Students, and a Master of Education in Special Education.
I came to Bangor Township not knowing if I knew enough to teach in this unique setting, I had no idea what to expect. Now, it is safe to say, that with all of my previous experiences, teaching students differently, I am able to use what I know to support my virtual students who are learning in a totally different and new way than any other.
Bangor Township School’s Students are the trail-blazers for students of the future.
